The Unplanned Adventure
« on: July 03, 2010, 06:53:47 AM »
Hey folks,

I thought I'd start a thread for the project I'm currently working on.
What I want to do with this is to have an ongoing project that will, for a great deal of it's early development, remain untied to any specific game mechanic or plot point. I'm going to go with the very broad genre of medieval adventure and it will be 1st person, beyond that I'm going to experiment with RPG elements, melee and ranged combat, puzzle solving, exploration. The idea being that anything that feels OK when I attempt to add it can stay and anything that feels clunky can go and it won't halt production of the game.
This feels like a bit of a weird way of working but the idea is to concentrate on what I can do rather than what I can't and not to get too bogged down in needing specific game mechanics. It's an experiment.

So, it's a medieval/fantasy game and I'm making it up as I go.

My other idea for this project is to share it even at it's early stages to try to get an idea, right from the start, of what people like and don't like, what you'd like added etc...

I'm hoping to have my first test areas/demo ready for you guys to have a look at within a month. In the meantime, here are a couple of pics of the progress on my town area.

Thanks guys, bob1234- yes, the characters will all have 'idle' animations and I'm working on dialogue boxes.

Be wary of the "unplanned" set up, you have to be sure to work on it only when you feel the same mood, otherwise you'll begin to drift between:
Exhibit A
Exhibit B
Exhibit C
Exhibit D
Exhibit E

Heh, I like all those though. The one thing I'm actually quite clear about is the look of it, it's the gameplay mechanics and plot elements that are yet to be established...

What my point was, was that I drifted a lot, even more so in gameplay (but that doesn't easily get shown in a photo).  Advice I learned: Work on it when you feel the same as when you made the idea.

edit: If Kurton were here, he could also tell you how many times I changed the story... *rolls eyes at self*

Wow, thats AMAZING.

I've been playing oblivion a lot lately (Gets 2 FPS on my mac ololol) and this sort of reminds me of that, which I guess is a good thing. The characters look pretty much amazing in those screenshots. The fat peasant looks so perfectly in proportion. You've got talent.

What is the blue bar next to the red one? Energy shields?

Most likely stamina or mana, I seriously doubt a game like this would have energy shields.

Yes, it's mana. I need to work on the HUD, I haven't really done much with it yet.
