CFG 3D Model Contest!
« on: April 30, 2010, 10:46:46 AM »
Hello everyone!

Today I present the official Cold Fusion Games 3D Model contest. This is a series of contests, each lasting 1 week long based purely around raw 3D models.

NOTE: CONTEST RULES HAVE BEEN CHANGED

The rules are simple, I will post a concept art piece, or photograph, or description of something for you to model on the Sunday of each week. You then have until the following Saturday to complete the model. Each entry must consist of 1 or more flat/shaded/AO render of the model, and 1 wireframe screenshot or render.

What is allowed?
• High poly models
• Low poly models
• Normal maps/Bump maps
• Sub-Division modeling
• NURBS/Spline modeling, so long as you convert to a standard mesh for the wireframe.

What is NOT allowed?
• Different colors applied to different parts of the model. (You may use any color you want for the whole thing)..
• Textures of any kind (except baked normal/bump maps)

Entries will be judged based on Creativity, Efficiency, Presentation and Overall Quality.

To the winners, your model render will be placed on the first post of this thread with your placing award on it for all to see. I may add prizes to the mix someday, but not yet.

Everything you make for these contests are STILL yours, nobody else has any rights over them. Do not send me your models, only send, or post your single image that includes renders of the model, plus a wireframe, and your name if you wish.

CONTEST #1: April 30th — May 9th

This first contest will be short. You have until Sunday May 9th to model this. The item to be modeled is a Metal Crate, high or low poly. Be creative!

Winner: Bink  1st Place Entry

CONTEST #2: May 9th — May 16th

In this contest, you have 1 week to make the most unique looking SpecOps/Military knife you can. I can be high or low poly, but it must be realistic.

I have no choice but to declare this contest a tie between John and Dimwit. Both knives were very well modeled, and were logical and cool looking. Dim3wit's had the best knife handle, using what appeared to be sculpting, but John the Brick had the best blade, with some neat circular holes.

TIE: dim3wit  1st Place Tie Entry

TIE: John the Brick  1st Place Tie Entry

Thank you for your participation.

CONTEST #3: May 16th — May 23rd

In this contest, you have 1 week to model a high or low poly laptop, as used in a lot of war games these days. The laptop should look distinctly military grade.

1st Place: .Minimum 1st Place Entry

2nd Place: John the Brick  2nd Place Entry

Thank you for your participation.

CONTEST #4: May 23rd — May 30th

In this contest, you have 1 week to model a standard 3.5" bare SATA hard drive. The deciding factors will primarily be how close you get to looking exactly like the real thing. Good luck.

1st Place: John the Brick  1st Place Entry

2nd Place: Jesseoffy 2nd Place Entry

Thank you for your participation.

CONTEST #5: June 20th — July 4th

In this contest, you have one week to model a complete 5.1 surround sound speaker set. You can make the subwoofer and speakers look whatever way you want, but they must be functional, no future tech allowed. Make them as cool and as crazy looking as you like.

May we use the models we submit to the contest in our games?

Anything you submit is yours. Do not send me models, only the renders of your model + wireframe in whatever presentation you want.

teh1ghool: No textures are allowed, except normal maps.

Until the wings3d opengl panic thing is fixed I can't do anything. Blender is seriously a bitch to model in. Just can't model like that. :3

Well, this isn't all that good, but:

Is about 96 polys, would come to 24 if we were allowed to add textures.

Can you re-render that with a black background, and a wireframe?

No polycount limit? I'm not in the position to bake normals, but I could do a nice high-poly for fun.

There's no polygon limit, because it would be very different based on what game engine you were making it for. In the future, I'll probably put a per-contest limit though. A limit that would be good for high end games, but not too high.

You can make a higher poly model if you want too, it just has to be within reasonable limits for a model of that kind.

The item to be modeled is a standard Metal Crate. As long as it is a metal crate usable for games, it's good, don't forgot the above rules.

Somehow I only got the Metal Crate part.
It's neither standard nor usable for games, really. At least not in large quantities, more like a single important object maybe, because it has +5k polys.

Okay I'm getting the feeling that people would rather do high poly models, SO, I am resetting this contest to include any kind of model, high or low poly. Normal maps are still allowed.

The new end date for the Metal Crate Contest is now Sunday May 9th! Start modeling!

THE RULES HAVE BEEN CHANGED Check the OP to see.

Well you guys had 1 week with the new rules to make a high or low poly crate, and Bink is the only one who made anything original, so I hereby declare Bink the winner.

The new contest is now up, READ THE RULES.

Hehe, the business end of the blade is less than 200 verts; the jagged part is just over 400, and the handle is around 80,000. (all that texture is geometry!) Not the most unique knife ever, but I'm proud of the way it came out.  ;)

And here's two different wireframes, the one on the bottom is without multires, the background is the pointer-finger ridge at multires level 4.
