Do you have X11 installed? GIMP requires X11.

Also, repair your permissions and verify your disk. The freezy programs possibly suggests corrupt virtual memory space (hard drive) or RAM.

Also, To give a program and Icon you need to Get info, then select the tiny icon up at the top. Then go into your graphics app and copy your image. Go back to the Get info window, and paste the image into the tiny icon at the top.

Make an image using photoshop or gimp. Then erase the background and ave as png (for me, the only one that works). Download image2icons and drag your picture onto it, and it will create a nice .icns picture for you.

Or you can just use Icon Composer, it is made by Apple for that specific purpose.

Yeah, IconComposer is great, and it's very simple. Note that if your icon doesn't replace the dim3 icon, go to get info, select the icon, and press delete. :)

to replace the icon, just right click on the app, then Show Contents>Contents>Resources, and replace the .icns file with yours. Really not that hard. I think I did that with iMovie a while back...

Use Disk Utility. It's in Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility and "Repair Disk Permissions".

Also, do what jesseoffy said--if you do what wendell said it will not do exactly what you want it to.
