SUICIDE SNOWMAN

Set in the distant future of 1998, players compete for supremacy in a sub-zero deathmatch environment using tools made to either melt your snowman opponents into puddles or freeze them into ice blocks/chunks.

Players:

Everybody's a friggin' snowman.

Weapons/Pickups:

The primary and only weapon is inactive and unusable until a power-cell is acquired. Power-cells (found throughout the map) are either Heat or Freeze (indicated by color) and move the weapon's primary fire right or left on a scale of Hot to Cold, the effects on your opponents being pretty obvious. As it usually goes, the more cells collected for a certain attack mode, the more powerful the weapon gets.

So if you acquired a Heat cell and then a Freeze cell right after, your gun would be neutral'd out and unusable again until you found another cell.

And there might be health pickups; maybe carrots, top-hats, or smth. I dunno. XD

Maps:

One or a thousand, I dunno how many maps there'd be. Some could have 'sunny' areas that degrade the players' health.

-

I'll add to this later.

Lol, you could do a lot with those pickups, like the top-hat being a star in Mario, or maybe it lets you sing and blasts away anyone in front of you.

Anyways, I'll know I'll be looking forward to the soundtrack. ;)

THE NINE ISLANDS.

This is a project that I've had in mind for a long time and have recently returned to after a fairly long break. Because part of my concept is to have single UV maps for large sections of the islands, the frame rate was getting killed by multiple 2048 textures. The new betas have no problem with this, I haven't checked this thoroughly but it seems that a small number of large textures is now less detrimental to frame rate than a large number of small ones?
Which is great news for me!

So, the concept is something like this-

Gameplay concept- Exploration, survival, adventure, puzzle game with RPG elements. Doesn't sound concise enough? Yeah, that's why it's just in the concepts section and not in showcase. The fact is that for this project I wanted to concentrate on environments first and allow myself a bit of elasticity as far as what kind of game it will be. The focus will definitely be on the islands themselves and the plot will be puzzle driven though I hope to incorperate survival elements, the need to eat sleep, keep warm at night, etc...

Plot Concept-
1928, Charles Durnst famous scientist, anthropologist, botanist, launches his expedition to find the nine missing islands referred to in the ancient texts of (well this bit needs a bit of work but I'm basically thinking that Charles is continuing his grandfather's work here and is looking for a lost civilization).
Intro-
Camera traveling over the sea, through the mist an island emerges, unconscious on the beach lies a man, his clothes tattered, seemingly the survivor of a shipwreck.

Scene 1- Awakening on the beach the player Finds himself on an island, looking around he soon discovers a washed up journal. This is a key item and will provide the back story and introduce the plot. It will also reveal the identity of the player (Charles Durnst) and will get updated at major plot points so the player can view his progress retrospectively.

Here are the shots of Crab Peak, my first location.

I have to say I love the feel of that map, though it is still a bit empty.

I really, really, like this! Even though the textures are low res, you still manage to create a nice scale, and a decent level of quality. Good work. :)

Haha! Cool. Concept reminds me of Indiana Jones... :)
I like the emptiness, especially the fog. From those images I get a feeling that something is lurking somewhere there. What are the "bad-guys" going to be like?

Thanks, I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by how acceptable the low res textures look. Most of what you see here is a single 2048 texture and the island is pretty big. The nice thing about doing maps like this is that I can draw on fake lighting and smooth transitions between textures and so on.

I have a few enemies in mind although I think the focus will be exploration and puzzles. I'm working on a giant crab that will be on the beach and there will definitely be something lying in wait around the dark side of the island... ready to jump out...

Giant Crab... oh, I remember an old movie that was about these guys who escaped some prison on a hot air balloon and reached some island where animals were gigantic: they met giant birds, crab, bees, etc. and had to fight them off. That would be cool if you had some big animals. Sorry I can't remember the name...

giant crab

Do you have to flip it over on it's back and then attack it's weak point for massive damage?

Looks very nice though. Add some vegetation!

Bored much?

@ Dom: I like the concept, and Kuu started off the same way  (minus the artstyle).  One pitfall you must avoid, however, is that dim3 is not designed for the type of world you intend to create.

True, but ATM what's the better free alternative?
