Posting in Showcase <--Read first-->
« on: November 20, 2009, 01:39:58 AM »
Hello,

Recent events have pushed several users new to dim3 away from the forum. I fear this will continue to happen unless proper action is taken. There is one guideline that users must follow if they are to be taken seriously by the community, and there are several general rules of thumb which all users should try to abide by. The guideline is as follows:

Do not post content that is not original. What does this mean? Do not change a few physics values, or even a few weapons in the dim3 Demo project and post screenshots of the demo levels on this forum. It is alright to post your project at its early stages of development, but be sure to have put a lot of effort into that early development. First impressions are everything. Make it good!

Furthermore, all users should, but are not required to initially post extensive game information, such as a complete storyline or description of the game. This does not mean a basic summary of what the player tries to do in the game. Show us every detail. Show us concept art for your game's entities. Even if the models are just placeholders, show us that you are working hard to complete a well thought-out game. The more you can show, the better, and the more respect you will gain from the community.

One final note: If your project does not follow what is written above, post it in Idle Chatter! It will get an equal amount of attention and once you have something to show for it, move it to Showcase.

Update 9/21/09
You may post your project's initial development ideas here:

Thank you,
Ryan

As far as the original content, I imagine that stuff specifically marked as a demo mod would be decent in showcase.  It would probably allow the demo to move forward from it's ugly state.

Edit: I'm not posting a storyline for P4 :p

Edit 2: Some things I've noticed:

1- Person A, new to the forum, posts a thread asking for help/assets.
2- Already existing members tell him to learn to do the stuff himself, it'll only help.
3- Person A, after some kind responses from members, learns this stuff himself
4- Person A is no longer considered a "n00b"
(I can name a current member for that this occurred)
5-Person B comes along, abbreviates everything, adds rediculous amounts of smilies, and acts as if they were txting
6- Person B asks for assets
7- Person B gets his ass flamed
8- Cycle repeats from 5, community gets increasingly pissed, flames become nastier

What I've ultimately seen is that people that write a mature, non-txt'd post, don't get flamed as badly, if at all.  Too many people come here acting like the dippy end of adolesence.

I agree too.

Among other things, taking the time to write a comprehensable post definitely implies to us that the new member is willing to put in some work for what he or she wants.

It has been the past experience of the community that few started projects ever went far. That is why I suggest that all announced projects should have as much content as possible. This topic is now locked.

Bwahaha!!

Yes I know this topic is locked, but I did want to give a suggestion. I think it should be a rule of sorts that the people should NOT be allowed to republish the demo. This basically means that, if someone is making a "game", it has to contain enough original content to separate it from the demo project.

No more demo rehashes!
