Hey, Brian, can I tell you something very personal but obvious:
Dim3 is awesome! (:

I was hoping for more participants, though.

And this guy, too:

I'm getting further into creating decent auto-generated models, but I need to back up a little and think about more multi-limbed things.  There's a good reason nobody has really done this to any extent, it's basically trying to recreate what humans do.

Haha, cool! Are the textures auto-generated as well? Reminds me of the Wizard of Oz robot

And what are you currently working on, Dom?

I'm working on an idea for a mine defence game, featuring my little goblin guy which I posted in 3d models. It's a sort of platform game where you set traps to stop the goblins reaching the miner.

Yup, the textures are auto-generated.  I might drop this for a while and go back to working on auto-generating maps, which is coming along nicely.  It's still hard to look at videos of something like Destiny with hand made maps -- it seems an impossible hill to climb, but I think I've gotten at least to maybe Marathon levels of maps, just a lot more random.

Nice! How about you use auto-generated textures as mild displacement maps? That would be a fun way to put some variation into the geometry.

I think there was a similar project focusing on space, was it's name Infinity? Not sure if they're still developing it but they created randomized planets and planned on doing the same with cities and similar. Was it a Kickstarter project? Anybody remembers Infinity?

Yeah, it's interesting, but what it's doing is basically the same thing spore kind of did, which is combining random parts and colors and models.  It's auto-generated, but more puzzled together.  This might be the way to go, but I thought I'd take a shot at doing it all the way from scratch.

Your project is very different anyway, but how about displacement maps? I'd love to get wicked organic characters out of it

/edit:
Don't need to be actual displacement maps but maybe for generating funny geometry out of it, converting it into actual geometry -> party!

There is displacement, the scales or the texture in the fabric body part are displaced, it just doesn't show unless it's in the lighting.  As for more complex things like belts of buckles, I'm still puzzling all that out.  I just want to get multi-limbed stuff working first!

Made a little testing dummy

688 polygons
180px random displacement map and texture map

before & after

There'd need to be a lot more polygons in the model, but that's not a bad idea.  Right now the model is basically a lot of long tubes, but they can certainly change.
